• No matter if it is the 4th of July, or just another day in the summer, chances are someone in your area is barbecuing. Barbecuing has become a standard American tradition for families. The reason as clear as to why, not only does the food that comes from barbecuing have a taste that is unmatched by other cooking methods, but outdoor fireplace cooking grills presents a reason for families to gather together. Some on my most memorial experiences happened outdoors at one of my families many get-togethers.

First, no Outdoor cooking would be complete without guests and proper outdoors weather. Plan ahead of time, checking with your potential guests for scheduling conflicts and issues. Finding a date and time that is suitable for everyone should not be to hard as long as you everyone enough advanced notice. Alternatively, be sure to check the weather for that type of year. If you live in a climate that cannot be predicted, then you may want to have a backup plan just incase unusual weather comes. You cannot predict things like rain and thunderstorms ahead of time, but you can make sure that you hold you barbeque during the time of year that will be pleasant to your guests. A outdoor fireplace cooking grills do not work as well in cold weather and may hold more negative memories of trying to cook rather then good memories of family and friends.

Outdoor cooking has been around since early cavemen figured out that food tasted great after being cooked on an open fire. Perhaps one of the main memories attached to a family barbeque is what was on the menu that day. Barbequing opens a whole array of types of foods available. The type of foods you serve should largely depend on your crowd and the event in which you are celebrating. With the wide range of possibilities, you are sure to find at least a few items that will please your crowd.

Make sure that you prepare ahead for your barbeque. 12 to 24 hours before you plan on beginning the party, make sure to thaw, prepare, and marinate the meat you will be cooking. Once you have the meat stored away, soaking up the marinate, then you must start thinking about what types of side dishes you will be having. If you want a completely tradition barbeque, you may want to stick with traditional sizes. Traditional barbeque sides include potatoes and potato salad, baked beans, and coleslaw. Your traditional condiment bar should include pickles, relish, and onions. These foods are typically severed at barbeques because they are easy to prepare and store until the event happens. You may want to cook other items, but any barbeque is complete with just the items listed above.

A themed barbeque may present more opportunities to hold a festive event. With a themed event, you can splurge on the atmosphere and decorations. Matching tablecloths, napkins, and plates can be found at any local store. You can also match your décor to the party. For example, a luau could simply be creative colored utensils, leis, and Tiki torches, all of which are extremely cheap. You can even reuse the Tiki torches later!

Your party area should be set up before guest arrive. It only takes a few minutes to get everything ready, but the reaction you get from your arriving guests may make you feel like you were preparing and decorating all day. Depending on the situation, you may or may not want to have the food already cooking on the grill. The smell will surely be inviting if you start cooking ahead!

  • Without speaking a word of Italian, you can travel in Italy. You can just arm yourself with Italian hand signals, a genuine smile, and an outgoing personality, and you are set to explore Il Bel Paese. Or, are you?

Still, you’re better off studying Italian before you go. To guide you, however, you can utilize these Italian hand signals.

    Un momento!

In English, this translates to “one moment, please.” Just make a number 1 with your index finger, pointing upwards. This can also mean “may I speak, please?”, but it will be handy to study Italian then.

    Ho fame

This is a plea to your hosts to feed you, meaning “I’m hungry.” You need to hit your stomach with the side of your flat hand, which should convey a clear message. Still you’ll need to learn to speak italian words to grasp Italian food; or else, you will find yourself gagging on pasta and pizza. You’ll understand the difference between pollo and polipo if you study Italian. These dishes might bring you allergies, after all!

    Ehi tu, vieni qui

This means “come here.” It’s the same come hither signal applied in America. You need to apply this with care because this could look sexually inviting or obnoxious. It is still better practice to learn to say “prego, potete aiutarli” to ask someone to come over.

    Silenzio

This uses the universal gesture of pressing your index finger to your lips for “silence.” If you wish to explain why you want quiet, though, you will have to learn italian.

    Idea!

“I have an idea!” is the correct translation for this. Emphasize that you have an idea by putting on a happy face with your hand on your head. However, putting your great idea across will require time and effort if you didn’t bother to study Italian.

    Perfetto

Made with your thumb and index fingers forming a circle, do this with both hands, and you’ve praised someone with a perfect score. This hand signal doesn’t demand that you speak italian, which makes this very handy in your Italian travels.

    Scusi, devo andare al bagno

Wear a pained expression while holding up your index and middle fingers if you want to go to the bathroom. If you require regular bathroom trips, this is important.

It is poetry in motion to use these Italian hand gestures. Still, it never hurts to know and read Italian poetry in books, billboards, and street signs, which requires that you do have to learn Italian! Then why not get the best of both worlds?

  • When I was growing up, my Mom made soups a lot. They were always good, but sometimes they would be magnificent. What made the difference you ask… dumplings! On special occasions, or when we just were being extra sweet, Mom made her special Lentil Vegetable Soup with Dumplings. Now, granted, as kids we might have not been so thrilled eating lentils and vegetables, but throw some dumplings in there and we were sold. I think just about every soup and stew can benefit from the addition of some light, tasty dumplings in the mix. If you’ve heard horror stories about how hard they are to make, don’t believe it. These dumplings are easy to mix up and once you get your timing down, you’ll be fine. Surprise your family tonight and treat them to dumplings in their soup.

  • Close your eyes, and picture that large, mouth-watering fresh maine lobster waiting on your plate for you to crack open and enjoy. You’d be hard-pressed to think of anything that sounds better. However, don’t rush out for a live lobster dinner just yet. Wouldn’t it be fun to learn a little bit about the critter you’re craving before you indulge?

We all know that the original citizens of America were the Native Americans. There were so few of them back in those days and so many lobsters just lying around in tide pools, that they could have all they wanted. If the truth were told, though, they didn’t want any to eat. To them, a lobster was just fertilizer for their fields. They also used the meat as fish bait.

The early European settlers which graced our shores didn’t eat lobsters online, either. They’d pick them up by hand to use as fertilizer or to feed to the lowest creatures of their society, slaves, indentured servants, children, and the poor. After years of this practice, indentured servants begin to protest the constant lobster diet. In fact, they went so far as having it written into their contracts that they would never have to eat lobster more than three times a week.

Since lobsters could be harvested so easily by hand from the tide pools, there was no need for people to devise more technological methods of trapping them. It wasn’t until the 1850s that lobster traps first appeared. The lobsters these early harvesters caught weren’t marketed live, either. They were sent to canneries. The early canning methods pretty well eliminated the flavor of the meat leaving the resulting product pretty bland and tasteless. Naturally it failed to catch on with consumers.

With the advent of modern transportation, live lobsters became the delicacies they continue to be today. As it became possible to ship live lobsters to America’s largest cities, they caught on with the well-to-do, and the rest is just history.

Have you ever felt a little funny about watching a lobster resting quietly in a fish tank only minutes before he appears on your plate? Don’t worry. That’s been a common feeling since people began eating lobsters years ago. But if you want to experience lobster in its freshest form, this is the way it has to be done.

My great-grandmother lived most of the way through the 1960s. People around her were eating lobsters and other seafood, but she refused to even consider the possibility. It’s not that she was a picky eater, because she had been raised to eat everything that was put on her plate. It’s just that her sensibilities had been honed during America’s Victorian era when ladies would never even think about something as ghastly as tossing a live lobster into boiling water. Pass me the smelling salts, please!

It’s hard to believe that our ancestors didn’t like the way maine lobster tasted. Just think of all the good food that was wasted as fertilizer. Their palates were just very different from ours. As our society developed more sophisticated tastes, lobsters finally became the delicacies they were always destined to be.

  • Celebrations and family get togethers seem to bring out something within us. Cooking is the tie that binds people in ways that they do not immediately realize. Families gather around the dinner table to talk about their day. Co-workers bond over office parties celebrating birthdays, special promotions or retirement. The food that we share does more than nourish our bodies, it also nourishes our minds and spirits.

Cooking does not have to be complicated. There are free recipes everywhere, from the grocery store to the internet. Most dishes are not hard to make nor do they require ingredients not found in most grocery stores. All cooking begins with a few basic items that every kitchen should have. Cooking utensils make the top of the list. There is no cooking baking performed without some basic tools.

    cooking
We watch television cooking shows and are envious at the gadgets and professional equipment at the chef’s fingertips. Yes, it would be nice to have a set of titanium knives but they are not a necessity. If you are a beginning chef, stick with cookware that is durable yet affordable. As you progress in skill then you will have the knowledge to know what pieces of equipment suit you best.

Once you have assembled all of the basic kitchen items you will need, it is time to find recipes that you want to try. Remember to start small and work up from there. Cooking does not have to be complicated. Beginning chefs often make that mistake. They find an elaborate recipe and then become discouraged when it does not turn out the way it should. Just remember to take it slow, make it simple and try to enjoy yourself.

    cooking baking
The kitchen is stocked and the recipes are out. You have ventured into the world of culinary delights and joy of cooking. It may not always turn out like you want but the important thing is that you did try. Cooking is a common bond and brings us closer together. It may be a simple cocktail party or an elaborate Christmas dinner. The point is people gathering together to nourish their bodies and their spirits.

  • I know a lot of people who think that serving baked beans out of a can is just fine. And in some cases canned baked beans are adequate. But my family LOVES their baked beans, so canned isn’t good enough. I’ve found the perfect flavor combinations when I make my Baked Beans With Tomatoes that just aren’t there with other recipes, and certainly not in a can. This is a very traditional recipe, with all the classic ingredients like molasses, mustard, and bacon. Using navy beans or northern beans gives this dish a slightly different appearance than what you find in other recipes or in the canned variety. You won’t find a better recipe for homemade baked beans. This dish is meant to impress!

30 minute meals are not impossible and are a great answer to the hectic pace set in our lives by work, family and other obligations. Great cooking class ideas do not have to take a long time to prepare.

A couple of cooking tips to help achieve great meals quickly are to use pre-sliced vegetables from the salad bar or already washed and bagged lettuce for a salad. You would be surprised at how much time this saves. Another tip is to use thinner slices of meat. The thinner cuts will cook in far less time. The key is to find high-quality cuts that are tender.

    food and cooking
Cooking tips are not just about finding ways to save time in the kitchen. One tip for preparing any recipe is to know your intended dining audience. If you are preparing a meal for a steak-and-potatoes crowd, a fish Ceviche (a raw fish-like salsa) may not go over well. You must know who your audience is. If you are cooking for someone on a kosher diet, you must follow certain rules in cooking.

Food and healthy cooking can be as complicated or as simple as you want to make it. A sure recipe for disaster is to attempt a new recipe while under time constraints or feeling pressured. Cooking tips mean nothing if there is not a desire to create. Cooking is an art and one that takes time and practice in order to master. The greatest cooking tips anyone can give are ones that let you know that mistakes are inevitable but nothing is impossible.

    joy of cooking
All recipes come from one of two things: a need or a desire for that dish. Cooking tips can come from a variety of places. They can be found within the cooking equipment, on the internet or come from family or friends. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, ask for some advice. Chances are that you were not the only person to fumble over that particular attempt. Have fun with it and enjoy yourself because in the end, what matters most is the experience.
